Scaling up wheat production in Nigeria has received support from a $163 million African Development Bank (AfDB) loan, the government said. 50,000 hectares in Jigawa State and 10,000 hectares in Kebbi would be utilized as part of the wheat project, which would be launched Nov. 10 as part of the government’s commitment to agriculture and food security. Nigeria, with a population of about 217 million people, has the largest market in Africa. Despite its substantial arable land area, the country relies on imports to meet its food and agricultural product needs, according to the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture

North America’s spring wheat could be in high demand this year due to crop quality problems overseas. “There is going to be a good market for solid CWRS (Canadian Western red spring) 13, 14 and even 15 (percent protein),” said Neil Townsend, chief analyst with GrainFox. He has heard about serious quality problems in the European Union, including Poland, which produces the highest protein wheat in the region. “Apparently, they’re injecting artificial gluten protein into their wheat when they’re making flour,” said Townsend

Farm bill discussions in the U.S. Capitol will likely take a back seat in the next few weeks as Congress works to keep the federal government from shutting down, according to the leader of the National Association of Wheat Growers. The 2018 Farm Bill expires Sept. 30. The government's fiscal year also ends that day.

Increased demand for railcars and performance issues sent U.S. rail rates soaring, with Secondary Railcar Auction Market Bids hitting their highest since 2014. Since then, rail rates have eased drastically. From March 2023 to July 2023 secondary bids for railcars have been negative, indicating that the current supply of railcars is sufficient for meeting the needs of shippers.Decreased volumes and the subsequent decrease in rail tariff rates and Secondary Railcar Market Auction Bids have added additional pressure to already low basis levels, helping boost the competitiveness of U.S. wheat to importers.
