Variable Rate Nitrogen in Southeast Idaho Irrigated Winter and Spring Wheat

Dr. Matt Yost, Elisa Woolley, Dr. Byran Hopkins
In a new, collaborative project between Utah State University and University of Idaho researchers, variable rate nitrogen zones will be studied on Christensen Farms in Southeast Idaho. A simple approach to VRPIN was evaluated on five potato crops within a wheat-wheat-potato cropping system in southeast Idaho in 2021. They initiated the work and wanted to trial variable rate N applications utilizing existing field knowledge coupled with research-based N approaches.

This approach consisted of creating management zones for base rates of nitrogen followed by in-season monitoring and VRN applications. The initial data is showing promising potential for VRPIN to benefit both winter and spring crops. The current project tests a precision N management approach for wheat in the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons.
