Development of Resistant Wheat Cultivars for Management of Hessian Fly in Idaho

Drs. Arash Rashed, Steven Odubiyi, Patrick Hatzenbuehler, Jae Ryu

Yield reductions due to Hessian fly infestation of spring and winter wheat can be significant in northern Idaho.  However, widespread economic losses in the region have not occurred in recent years due to effective resistance in many of the most widely planted and highest-yielding varieties.  Hessian fly resistance in PNW wheat needs to be maintained through continuous screening, which is the primary focus of our project.

The UI IPM Laboratory works with the UI and WSU breeders to develop Hessian fly resistance in all wheat market classes through this project. In addition, this project also supports studies on early detection of Hessian fly infestations through remote sensing and provides an updated economic loss analysis due to this pest in Idaho.
