India Imposes Wheat Stock Limit to Arrest Price Rise

India has imposed a limit on the amount of wheat stocks traders can hold in an effort to bring down prices, food secretary Sanjeev Chopra told reporters on Monday. The world's second biggest wheat producer will also provide 1.5 million tonnes of wheat to bulk consumers such as flour millers, as part of efforts to bring down prices, which have risen 8% in a month, Chopra said. The impact of removing the dams would be "significant" for overseas customers, said Britany Hurst Marchant, executive director of the Idaho Wheat Commission. "The price of wheat would increase because the price of freight would increase and those costs have to be offset somehow," she said.

The European Union is currently forecast as the top wheat producer at 140.5 MMT, up 1.5 MMT on favorable growing conditions in France, Hungary, and Italy. While China and India are the second and third leading producers, production in those countries is largely unavailable to the global market.
