Snow Water Equivalents (SWE) are measured at SNOTEL sites throughout the state of Idaho. With the recent snowfall in the Pacific Northwest, growers have a reason to shift attitudes towards a more optimistic view for 2022 production. Current measured snowpack shows the Northern Panhandle region of Idaho at 108 percent of average, while the Spokane, Clearwater, and Salmon regions all show 120 percent or greater. This is a promising way to start 2022 as the central mountains are still rated D2 (Severe Drought) on the drought monitor.
In the southern parts of the state, the positive story holds. Western Idaho shows 121 percent or greater of average. In Northeastern Idaho and the headwaters of the Snake River, snowpack measures 115 percent of average and higher in these early winter months. Following a year in which excessive drought impacted producers statewide, a good start to 2022 is a welcome shift. Monitor current snowpack levels here.
