Outlook on U.S. ag economy improves in December

For only the second time since May, the Ag Economy Barometer increased in December reflecting an improved perspective on current conditions in the agricultural sector. The Purdue University/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer was up 9 points, to 125 in December. The Index of Current Conditions and the Index of Future Expectations also increased in the month. The Ag Economy Barometer is calculated each month from 400 US agricultural producers’ responses to a telephone survey. This month’s survey was conducted between Dec. 8-14, 2021. “Excellent crop yields this fall combined with strong crop prices provided many producers with their most positive cash flow in recent years,” said James Mintert, the barometer’s principal investigator and director of Purdue University’s Center for Commercial Agriculture.
