Drought Conditions Persist Through Central Plains

The USDA ERS has reported that, as of Jan. 17, 59% of the US winter wheat production remains under drought condition.  The wheat crop in Kansas is still rated as good/excellent, but there is limited subsoil moisture to sustain the crop in Kansas, Oklahoma, or much of the high plains.  Winter cold temperatures are more stressful on the crop when under these dry conditions. The cool and dry conditions also have favored winter grain mites, which are common in Oklahoma and prevalent in winter months.  Producers are encouraged to monitor fields for mite infestations, which can cause stunting and discoloration of plants.  Most important for the plains, however, is the need for precipitation.
