Severe and persistant drought in major wheat producing regions of Russia and Kazakhstan are adversely affecting production levels.
USDA recently reduced the production estimate by 4.5 million tons for Russia down to 53 million tons. Last year production reached 62 million tons. The situation is similar in Kazakhstan where production was lowered by 3 million tons to 14 million, down from 17 million in 2009.
In Russia, the drought is the worst in the Volga, Ural and Siberian Districts where the majority of the spring wheat is produced. In Kazakhstan, a large majority of the wheat produced is spring wheat and the main grain growing regions are affected by the drought.
These drought conditions, combined with lower planted acreage in Canada, have caused the world wheat production estimate to drop from 669 million tons last month to 661 million tons this month. Further production declines could be possible if adverse weather conditions persist. |
