The Agriculture Department is planning a general Conservation Reserve Program sign-up of about four million acres in mid-August.
USDA is planning an August sign-up for CRP acres. (DTN file photo)House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson, D-Minn., said last week that USDA would start the four million acre sign-up on August 15. A USDA official confirmed that the USDA Farm Service Agency is almost ready for the sign-up, but hopes it will begin before August 15 and will be slightly more than four million acres.
FSA Administrator Jonathan Coppess told the National Association of Conservation Districts board Monday that contracts on 4.5 million acres will expire this year and that the Obama administration wants to come as close as possible to keeping those acres in the program or replacing them with other acres. Coppess said the administration wants the full 32 million acre enrollment provided by Congress in the 2008 farm bill.
